Scrapbooks, 1870-1902.

This collection contains four large scrapbooks compiled by members of the Carnell family of Philadelphia, PA in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One volume bears the name Amanda Carnell. Three of these scrapbooks contain newspaper and magazine clippings of a religious nature. Many articles were taken from such sources as The Ram's Horn and The Christian Herald and Signs of Our Times. The fourth volume is wholly visual, made up of colored engraving and chromolithographic cut outs and trade cards. One series of hand-colored engravings by various French artists depicts late 19th century women's fashions. Of primary importance are 19 chromolithographic prints by Currier & Ives that include "Household Treasures," "The Children in the Woods," "Little Bluebell," and "Good Little Girl" dated 1871.

The Carnell family lived in North Philadelphia from the late 19th to the mid 20th century. Amanda Carnell (maiden name unknown) graduated from the Foulke and Long Institute in 1899 and married Charles Carnell, owner of an iron foundry shop and machine shop in Philadelphia.
